Turkey’s total solar power capacity surpassed 16,000 megawatts this week, accounting for 14 percent of the country’s total energy infrastructure.
Turkey’s electricity production reached 111,463 megawatts as of August 7, of which solar power accounted for 16,004 megawatts, according to the Turkish Electricity Transmission Corporation (TEIAŞ).
Turkey relies heavily on imports to meet its energy needs, making high electricity bills a key concern for the government.
The country has managed to increase its overall electricity production while reducing its reliance on coal-fired power generation by aggressively shifting to clean energy sources such as wind, solar, geothermal, and hydropower.
The solar power sector has grown significantly over the past decade, increasing its capacity from 40 megawatts in 2014 to current levels.
Turkey aims to triple its renewable energy capacity by 2053 in its quest to achieve carbon neutrality. Renewables currently account for more than 50% of the country's installed electricity capacity.
